Built for designers Gavin McWilliam MBALI and Andrew Wilson, this garden was full of challenges. The contractor was faced with a 10m slope from one side of the garden to the other, requiring major earthworks and the creations of terracing using substantial reinforced concrete retaining walls faced in brick or stone. Traditional Chiltern Bovingdon bricks and contemporary Corten weathered steel have been sensitively used in the design.

A comprehensive drainage and irrigation system was installed to allow the mature planting and wildflower areas to flourish. The new levels, supported by the structural lines of pleached hedging, create greater privacy whilst the rejuvenation of hardscape and planting gives the garden a new lease of life. This is a relaxed and comfortable family garden that retains a sense of grandeur in keeping with the scale of the house.
