Overview The completion and occupation of the UK Support Command HQ, within the redeveloped Hammersley Barracks at Aldershot, marked a milestone for the client, Aspire Defence Capital Works. The headquarters building was officially opened in May 2014, marking the completion and delivery of more than 560 new and refurbished buildings since 2006 under the Allenby Connaught redevelopment and construction programme. The soft landscape scheme provides a dynamic setting for this important new headquarters building. It consists of extensive lawn areas, formal tree avenues, way-marking and edge-treatment plantings and an extensively planted entrance facade that creates a vibrant sense on arrival. In total, Gavin Jones planted more than 15,000 plants, 76 trees, 2,000sq m of turf and 20,000sq m of seeding.
Judges’ comments The soft planting scheme surrounding the prestigious new headquarters of the British Army’s support command has been very well executed by the contractor. Despite some areas of waterlogging in evidence during the judging visit, plants had established well. They were well spaced and mulched and all trees were professionally tied. This is a very attractive scheme that provides the perfect setting for this important building.
