Overview The site is located in the development zone of Haiyang’s new city in Shandong Province, China. It plays an important role in economic development and tourism in the area around the Bohai Sea. The city is located on the Huanghai Sea coast in the south wing of Jiaodong Peninsula, and is a modern coastal city characterised by its ‘green mountains, blue water and sophisticated urban features’. Haiyang Wetland Park is the biggest green space adjacent to the main venue of the 2012 Asian Beach Games. The site is 3.2km long in a designated area of 48 hectares on the lower reach of the Dongcun River estuary, where the salt and fresh water converge on each other.
Judges’ comments This 3.2km stretch of land adjacent to the river links the old and new cities of Haiyang. River banks, islands and a park have been completely redesigned and regenerated to create not only a wildlife haven but a beautiful and functional environment in which the residents of this growing city can walk, run, cycle, exercise and socialise. The positive impact of the project on both the natural environment and on Haiyang’s citizens is becoming evident on a daily basis and serves to illustrate how visionary planning can transform an area that has previously suffered from neglect and underinvestment.
