Overview Bartholomew Landscaping was approached as landscape architect and designer for a penthouse terrace on a recently completed new- build apartment block near Hampstead Heath, London. The firm worked very closely with the client to create an exterior space that could be accessible throughout the year. There were a number of logistical challenges, the main one being access to the seventh-storey terrace. The finished terrace includes bespoke canopies with retractable roofs and sides for full weather protection, including all associated screens, fixings, automation, heating and lighting as well as wind, snow, light and temperature sensors and remote control heaters mounted above the main elements. A bespoke kitchen features barbecue, side burners, twin sink with Quooker hot and cold water, fridge and ample storage. The whole terrace had a new lighting system connected to the properties’ Lutron system. A green wall was mounted on the side of an intrusive service duct and irrigation and wiring discreetly located under the new flamed-finish Gris Catalan stone slabs and composite decking.
Judges’ comments The contractor has used a stunning bioclimatic pergola on this rooftop terrace to provide an indoor/outdoor entertaining space. An aluminium frame with retractable roof and sides ensures that al fresco dining and relaxation can continue whatever the weather as temperature, light and ventilation are managed by the structure, which also protects from rain.
